People used to live in the village of Huez all year round, keeping the animals in these typical vaulted rooms, before Alpe d’Huez developed, from 1936 and then in the 1960s up to an altitude of 3000 metres.
Offering clear access in winter - by shuttle or cable car - the south-facing village of Huez lies at an altitude 400 metres lower than the resort. The road is today famous thanks to the Tour de France which regularly uses the Alpe d’Huez climb which all the cyclists with a little bit of training behind them, tackle with the hope of further improving on their times.
In the timeless tranquillity of the old mountain village, which at one time saw a lot of agricultural activity, the traditional mountain houses have remained unchanged. An authentic alpine house, the Ancolie lies at the heart of these houses all huddled together. With rooms overlooking the village or the church or south-facing offering magnificent views, guaranteeing nights at least as beautiful as your days...
